Teaching at Bute House

Teaching at Bute House is very rewarding.  The girls are enthusiastic and willing learners who enjoy being challenged.  Teaching at Bute House is hugely enjoyable and will offer you opportunities to develop your skills in the classroom and beyond.  Girls are taught by specialist teachers for some subjects from Reception.  Some Teachers may be employed as specialists who work across the whole school or as a Class Teacher.

The Pupils

The pupils are interested, engaged, enthusiastic and fun to teach. All classes are mixed ability and our non-competitive academic ethos means that every girl achieves to the best of her ability in these classes.  There is no setting or streaming, work is marked by comment and there are no formal examinations until Year 5 in preparation for the 11+ examinations.

The Teaching

Assistants are assigned to each teacher and are an invaluable resource to the teaching staff. The timetabling is weighted towards your teaching strengths whilst allowing you to develop in other areas of the curriculum and giving you non- contact time to reflect on your teaching. Teachers at Bute House work in partnership with the parents to enable their children to gain the most from their learning experiences at Bute House. Parents also support their children in their learning at home, building on all that is done in school. Classrooms are comfort cooled, light and extremely well resourced with the latest information technology and teaching equipment.

The Support

There are many opportunities for career development, through internal appraisal systems, inset courses and individual subject specialist courses. New staff entering Bute House and those new to the teaching profession are appointed a mentor to ensure that their first weeks at Bute House are as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Teachers from Bute House have gone on to further their careers as Heads, Deputies, Heads of Pre Preps and subject specialists at many of England’s top schools. The staffroom is a very positive, friendly and supportive environment. Teachers learn from each other, support one another and share their expertise.

The Location

The school is situated in Hammersmith, West London so there are many transport links. Staff travel into school in a variety of ways including bicycles, buses, trains – over and underground and feet!  There is no car parking on site.

Non-Teaching Posts at Bute House

Bute House is very fortunate to have a team of dedicated and hard-working non-teaching staff who offer a variety of support to all the teaching staff and so in turn contribute to the smooth running of the school and the general well-being and happiness of the girls.  We are very much aware that no school runs on its teaching staff alone and, as such, our non-teaching staff are valued and appreciated enormously.
