Multiplication in Year 3

Year 3 have been working on their multiplicative knowledge this term. On Tuesday they were posed with this question:

In field number 1, each cow can see twice as many sheep as cows; each sheep can see the same number of sheep as cows, so how many cows and sheep are there?

We discussed in detail where we could start with the problem and gave excellent reasoning to how many sheep and cows there are in the field.

The girls then worked in pairs to discuss how many cows and sheep there would be if:

  • In field number 3, each cow can see twice as many sheep as cows; each sheep can see one more sheep than cows
  • In field number 4, each cow can see twice as many sheep as cows; each sheep can see two more sheep than cows
  • In field number 5, each cow can see three times as many sheep as cows; each sheep can see twice as many sheep as cows

One Night Far From Here

This term, Year 2 are reading One Night Far From Here, a modern day bestiary. After looking closely at an illustration of the African savannah and working as a team to generate interesting description of the animals using noun phrases and similes, the girls wrote their own descriptive texts carefully organising their ideas into themed paragraphs. We took inspiration from Sir  David Attenborough and noticed how he describes all the action and cleverly links together what is happening. The girls wrote impressive texts using very creative description. Last Friday, the class were thrilled to use the green screen to put themselves up close with the animals and create 2H’s own wildlife documentary. You can enjoy watching it on the Parent Area of the website.

Sports News

It’s been a really busy week for the PE department and the various Bute House teams. Please see below for details and update on all of their recent matches.

A massive well done to the Year 5 and 6 girls that went to LEH for a Netball fixture.

The Y5 A team drew with LEH and the Y6 A team took part in a very exciting and tough match.

The orange, yellow and pink teams all won their matches.

Year 5 vs NHEH

They played amazing netball and really enjoyed the competition.

The Navy team won 17-1, such an amazing result!

Bute House vs Addison Primary School

Last but certainly not least, well done to all of the girls who played in the two football matches against Addison Primary School this week. Bute House managed to win both games 1 – 0, with Arabella and Iysha scoring the vital goals. All of the girls demonstrated an improvement in their individual technique and ability to play as a team. We are all so proud of you!

4D Assembly: Food Security

This morning 4D did a brilliant job of looking into the issue of food security and how that affects people in our community. Food security arises when families cannot guarantee that they will have enough food to enjoy three nutritious meal a day. We saw this issue exacerbated during the pandemic when many school children missed a meal a day, as a result of not having access to school lunches. We examined the impact that taking action can have to those in need. We also celebrated a few fantastic role models such as Marcus Rashford who have been striving to help. Finally, we discussed actions that we, as individuals, can take, to be grateful for the amazing food we have access to and how our small actions can have a big impact on others.  Well done 4D!

Geometry in Year 5

Some of our Year 5 girls have been making connections between their knowledge of angles, plotting coordinates on a four quadrant grid, rotational symmetry and pattern completion to create some lovely designs. You can see their wonderful work here.

Diamond Power Assembly

During our Wednesday assembly, we celebrated the importance of using our Diamond Power of curiosity and originality. The girls demonstrated a really good understanding of the difference between questions which indicate deeper thought and could lead to original ideas, and  questions which reflect a lack of thought and engagement with learning. We were entertained by Mr Man and Mr Dalrymple illustrating how many questions smaller children can ask in their thirst to find out ‘why?’.  It was also an opportunity to see how original ideas and a creative approach is relevant in all areas of the curriculum. There are a number of posters around the school to help the girls remember to use their Diamond Power every day.

Las mochilas de Year 3

Year 3 are packing up their bags in Spanish!

We are closing Unit 2 with a new craft activity, this time of a school bag. This helps the girls to complement their speaking practice and Unit 2 has revolved around expressing possession and distinguishing stationery. ‘¿Y tú, qué tienes en tu mochila?’
